Trivia Night Fundraiser—–$10/person

Be the team who will have bragging rights for knowing the most earth shattering or trivial information in all of library land.

Form a team of 4-6 colleagues or just join a team the night of the event.
Trivia Night with KLAEF is a fundraising event in which teams compete against each other in answering questions from various topics to win prizes.

From working together on tough questions to joking with other teams, team members bond with each other and other teams to create a fun, stimulating environment filled with friendly competition.  Everyone has fun at Trivia Night!  Spend the evening with us fundraising and showing off what you know.  We will have a cash bar at the event.

10 questions per round. 8 rounds total, each from a different category.
Prizes will be awarded to the top teams.

Here is how you sign up to attend this great event.

Go to the Kansas Library Association website (http://kslibassoc.org/home) and click on the conference link, click on registration and then go into the Online Store.  The Trivia Night event is on the second page, click on select to choose this event.

Because this is a separate event you do not have to be registered for the conference to participate in the fundraiser.  Bring your whole family if you want.

If you have questions please email Marie Pyko at mpyko@tscpl.org or call 785-580-4560.

Continuing Education grants success stories

October 27th, 2010

Continuing education really can make a difference.  Royce Ktts, Director of the Tonganoxie Library recently received a grant for continuing education to attend the MPLA Leadership Institute.  Here is what he said about the experience.

“A Week in the Mountains”

Earlier this year I was able to participate in the Mountain Plains Library Association Leadership Institute with funding made available by the Kansas Library Association Educational Foundation (KLAEF).

Combined with continuing education funds from the Northeast Kansas Library Association, I was able to take part in this wonderful opportunity with no cost to my library.

This year’s Leadership Institute took place at the YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park, Colorado and was facilitated by Association of College and Research Libraries Librarian of the Year Maureen Sullivan.

Participants and mentors were brought in from the states who make up the Mountain Plains Library Association, with representation from each state.  From Kansas we had Gail Santy, Tom Taylor, and yours truly.

We spent the week discussing a variety of concepts and working on issues of professional growth that our busy work lives leave us little time to contemplate. We had personal time to talk with mentors, and the highlight of the week for me was getting the chance to sit down with Maureen for an hour and talk about my plans for the future. She is an awesome individual and the quality of the materials she prepared will be a great knowledge base to draw from in the future.

I remember saying to someone at the beginning of the experience: “I can’t wait to see you all cry when we are done with this.” And wouldn’t you know it, when it came time for me to say goodbye I was the one bringing on the waterworks.

I would like to thank the Educational Foundation for making continuing education funds available for Kansas Librarians.  Sadly, in these times of budget cuts, continuing education funds are the first to get cut. The grant made available from the Educational Foundation meant that I was able to take advantage of an opportunity that will help me give back to the Kansas Library community for years to come.

Educational Foundation is there to help

September 17th, 2010

We all know that the tough economic times have not only affected our individual pocket books but also our savings and investments.  This is also true for Foundations across the country.

For our Kansas librarians grants and scholarships are never more important.

This year we are pleased to have been able to provide funds so that several Kansas librarians were able to attend conferences and workshops.

The following librarians applied and received continuing education funds

KLA Conference

Connie Weber

Goldie Harkins

Judith Cremer

MPLA Leadership Institute

Royce Kitts

We are very happy to be able to help our colleagues continue their growth as librarians.    Please consider applying for a Continuing Education/Professional Development grant for your next learning opportunity or next year’s KLA Conference.
